What is a Paleo Diet

The Paleo Diet, also known as the paleolithic diet or caveman diet, is based on the types of foods that was most likely eaten by our pre-agricultural human ancestors. This simply means eating organic fruits, vegetables, wild fish and grass-fed meats, while omitting all types of processed foods in our diet such as grains, legumes and dairy.

It is believed that we can live a healthier lifestyle if we eat these types of foods that our ancestors used to consume. Thus reducing our chances to acquire degenerative diseases such as cancer and diabetes, which have been brought upon our prolonged exposure of eating processed foods.

According to Loren Cordain Ph.D, a recognized author and one of the leading specialist in the Paleo diet, believes that there are seven fundamental characteristics of our pre-agricultural human ancestors which can help improve our overall health and reduce the risk to chronic diseases.

  • High protein absorbtion
  • Lower carbohydrate absorbtion and lower glycemic index
  • Higher fiber absorbtion
  • Moderate to higher fat absorbtion of monounsaturated and polyunsurated fats
  • Lower sodium and Higher potassium absorbtion
  • Net dietery alkaline load
  • Higher absorbtion of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and phytochemicals

Switching to a paleo diet is of course easier said than done, considering that we have always been taught that eating in moderation and a mix of all food groups is better than depriving ourselves from the foods we regularly eat.

But if you look closer to the effects of the food we eat as compared to how people used to eat centuries ago, back then they did not have to deal with modern day diseases that we have now.
